A.I Employee Brief  ·  June 21, 2026

My flight got canceled Sunday night. I was supposed to be wheels up at 5 AM Monday for work in Tallahassee, and then the weather report told me it was going to rain the entire week, straight through when I was meant to fly home.

So I looked at the map. Seven and a half hours each way. And instead of being annoyed, I got a little excited. A seven hour drive is easy for me. I get to listen to podcasts and audiobooks, and honestly it's relaxing. And my favorite part, I get to stop at some good vegan spots along the way and turn a canceled flight into an actual road trip.

And I was right to drive. The flight I would've taken home had its connection missed. I would've been stranded in the Atlanta airport for hours. By driving, I got myself home sooner.

Here's the part I want you to sit with. The whole time I was on the highway with a podcast playing and vegan pho in my future, my business was running. The blog published five posts that day, like it does every single day, and I never touched it. The podcast shipped. My A.I. clone recorded and went out through distribution without me in front of a camera. I was driving. The work was working.

I don't build systems so I can watch them. I build them so I can take the long way to Tallahassee and not lose a thing.

And somewhere on that drive, I finally made the call I'd been sitting on for weeks. I left Beehiiv. This whole newsletter's now running on Kit.

Why My A.I. Employee Runs on Kit

You already know I've got A.I. employees running this business. The Blog Agent that ships five posts a day. The Podcast Producer. The Clone that records and distributes without me on camera. What I haven't talked about yet is the one I've been quietly building for months. The Email and Newsletter employee. The one that drafted this issue, queued it, and only stopped to ask me to read it before it went out.

The Newsletter employee's in testing. Over the next few weeks I'm dropping daily voice memos into a folder, what happened, what I built, what I'm thinking, and seeing whether the employee can pull from that running story bank and still sound like me. I don't know yet. Some weeks it'll land. Some it might not. So if a future Sunday starts to sound off, hit reply and tell me. I'd rather you flag it than read past it. The whole point of a digital workforce is that the work still sounds like the human who hired it. It's also why I'm building all of this in public, you get to watch the testing, not just the polished version.

The key to all of this is that your A.I employee needs an MCP to actually do its job. Quick definition because I want all of us on the same page. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's the open standard that lets an A.I. directly operate another piece of software the way you'd operate it yourself. Read your list, create a broadcast, tag a subscriber, pull podcast episodes. Without an MCP, your A.I.'s taking screenshots and copying buttons. With one, it just does the work. No MCP, no employee but you and your precious time.

Here's the part that decided it. Kit shipped their MCP first. I migrated most of the system over, the tags, the sequences, the automations, the whole pathway. And the VERY next day, Beehiiv shipped theirs. The exact write access I'd been waiting on, the day after I moved.

So on the feature that matters most to a digital workforce, the two platforms are functionally identical now. And on the next thing that matters to me, segmentation, Kit's significantly ahead.

In plain English: segmentation is splitting your list by who someone actually is and what they actually want. A podcast listener gets routed differently than a grants reader. Someone who joined for the Speaker employee gets a different welcome than someone who joined for the Blog employee. The right person gets the right invitation, the wrong person doesn't get one at all.

Here's the proof, and the part that made me close the spreadsheet for good. This weekend I built five separate welcome sequences for my Labs sign-ups, one for each kind of A.I. employee someone might want to install. Five sequences in an hour with zero copy-pasting. An A.I. agent operated Kit directly through the MCP and did all the wiring. On Beehiiv I'd spent months with no sequences because it felt too manual, and not mature enough. That's what "significantly ahead" looks like in actual time saved.

When features tied and segmentation went to Kit, the only thing left was values. And it stopped being a tie immediately.

Kit's bootstrapped. The founder, Nathan Barry, posts three values on the office wall, teach everything you know, work in public, default to generosity. He says creators are their investors and means it. That's the ground I want my A.I. employee operating on.

Beehiiv took around fifty million in venture money. Its founder has said publicly that balance is a distraction and he works every weekend. That's his life and his right. But my whole promise to you is infrastructure over hustle, systems that run without you. I can't run my newsletter on ground that says the grind is the point.

I'm telling you all of this because being a digital workforce architect means I pick the ground first, every single time. The platform is the contract my A.I. employee signs. If it can't operate through an MCP, the employee isn't real, you are.

So before you let an A.I. employee anywhere near a new platform this month, two questions:

1. Can my A.I. employee actually operate this through an MCP, or am I going to be the employee?

2. Are the people who built this software building something I'd be proud to put my work next to?

Answer those two before you pay for one more tool. You won't waste an A.I. employee on the wrong ground again.
